MDCAT vs ECAT 2026
Pakistan's two career-defining entrance tests — MDCAT for medicine, ECAT for engineering. Pattern, syllabus, formula, negative marking and which test fits your strengths in 2026.
MDCAT (PMDC) is a 180-MCQ medical test with no negative marking, gating MBBS/BDS admission across ~175 colleges. ECAT (UET Lahore) is a 100-MCQ engineering test with -0.25 negative marking, gating BE programs at UET and Punjab engineering universities. They share Chemistry and English; MDCAT adds Biology and Logical Reasoning, ECAT adds Mathematics (Source: PMDC 2024; UET Lahore 2024).
- FSc stream determines eligibility — Pre-Med for MDCAT, Pre-Engineering for ECAT.
- MDCAT formula: 10% Matric + 40% FSc + 50% test. ECAT formula: 70% FSc + 30% test (UET).
- MDCAT closing merit is higher (91–93% at KEMU) than ECAT (~78% at UET Electrical/CS).
- MDCAT has no negative marking; ECAT deducts 0.25 per wrong answer.
- NUST, GIKI, FAST and AKU use their own tests — not ECAT or MDCAT.

Which Should You Take?
This is rarely a same-cycle choice — your FSc stream usually decided it two years earlier. If you're still in matric or early FSc, here's the framework:
- If you love biology, anatomy and human systems: Pre-Med + MDCAT is your path.
- If you love mathematics, problem-solving and abstract logic: Pre-Engineering + ECAT is yours.
- If you panic under time pressure: MDCAT gives 1 min/MCQ; ECAT also ~1 min but has math calculations — MDCAT feels more forgiving.
- If you guess freely: MDCAT's no-negative-marking rule rewards you; ECAT punishes you.
- If you want maximum future flexibility: MDCAT covers ~175 colleges; ECAT mainly covers UET system. Other engineering universities require their own tests.
- If you're strong in English and weak in Urdu medium: Both tests are in English — equally suited.
Once you commit to MDCAT, estimate your aggregate with the PMDC aggregate calculator and start with the MDCAT 2026 chapter-wise hub.
MDCAT vs ECAT — FAQs
What is the main difference between MDCAT and ECAT?▼
MDCAT (Medical & Dental College Admission Test) is a 180-MCQ medical entrance test conducted by PMDC for MBBS and BDS programs. ECAT (Engineering College Admission Test) is a 100-MCQ engineering entrance test conducted by UET Lahore for BE/BSc Engineering programs. The two tests share Chemistry and English but otherwise differ — MDCAT tests Biology while ECAT tests Mathematics (Source: PMDC 2024; UET Lahore ECAT 2024).
Can I prepare for both MDCAT and ECAT together?▼
It is technically possible but inefficient. Chemistry and English overlap, but Biology (MDCAT) and Mathematics (ECAT) are entirely separate FSc subjects. Most candidates choose Pre-Medical FSc (Biology) for MDCAT or Pre-Engineering FSc (Mathematics) for ECAT in 11th grade — locking in their path two years before the test.
Is ECAT easier than MDCAT?▼
Difficulty depends on your strengths. ECAT has fewer MCQs (100 vs 180) and shorter time, but mathematics questions are calculation-heavy. MDCAT has more questions covering more chapters but is largely conceptual. ECAT 2024 had a closing merit of ~78% at UET Lahore vs MDCAT closing at 91–93% for top public medical colleges — making MDCAT more competitive (Source: UET Lahore 2024; UHS 2024).
Does ECAT have negative marking?▼
Yes. ECAT applies -0.25 marks for every wrong answer, while MDCAT has no negative marking (PMDC removed it in 2020). This makes ECAT strategy more conservative — skip if unsure (Source: UET Lahore 2024 prospectus; PMDC 2020).
What is the ECAT aggregate formula?▼
UET Lahore uses 70% FSc + 30% ECAT for engineering admissions. Some other engineering universities (NUST, GIKI, FAST) use their own tests rather than ECAT. The MDCAT formula is 10% Matric + 40% FSc + 50% MDCAT (Source: UET Lahore admission policy 2024; PMDC 2024).
Which test is required for medical and engineering universities in Pakistan?▼
MDCAT is required for every PMDC-recognised medical and dental college (MBBS/BDS). ECAT is required for UET Lahore and Punjab government engineering universities. NUST uses NET, GIKI uses its own test, FAST uses NU test, and AKU uses its own MBBS test — so ECAT is not universally accepted for engineering (Source: PMDC 2024; UET Lahore 2024; NUST 2024).
